I agree with you partially. There are a vast number of certification programs out there with a wide range in their costs.

I did take the time to get certified through IVAA because, in my mind, it sets me apart from other VA's by showing that I'm taking this seriously enough that I would take the time to take some tests to show that I understand business Ethics and am willing to proclaim that I agree with the ethics statements that IVAA has. I also took the CVA exam again for the same reason, it shows that I have enough knowledge to pass those tests.

Does that make me a better VA than someone who hasn't taken the exams and been certified? No. To me, and my clients, it means I'm take my business seriously enough to invest my time and some money into getting this certification.

But, then I've seen VA's who invest tons of money and time into getting a ton of certifications. I don't think that's wise either. I belong to IVAA and felt the time and financial commitment I invested to get my certification were well spent for my business.

But, in the end my knowledge, experience, and references speak loud and clear that I know what I'm doing. The CVA that goes with me now is just an added bonus.

I can say that it has helped to set me apart from others on more than one occasion.

I was wondering about the value of training also. As a new person to the VA industry, I was looking at all the training that is being offered. As you said, there is an extremely wide range of prices. I agree with you that the actual software knowledge is very important in addition to the years of experience that a person has. I took a course on opening a business (any business) and found this very helpful. Don't really know if I am going to learn anything more from taking a VA certification course.

Hello Donna, good to see your blog. I can't say I've ever worked in my pyjamas, just can't get in the right frame for thinking, however I am at my computer early in the morning and could end up without breakfast if I'm not careful.

And I agree with you - it's not for sissies. Like you I get lots of calls from women wanting to do what I do - some of them mothers seeking permission to go ahead and give it a try - even with kids at home. I just tell them I started with 5 daughters at home and suddenly all their excuses are gone! But it takes a distinct mindset and determination to get it happening as many of us already know.
